Every website has a "look". Some look good, some look horrible. Some are clean and some are sloppy. Some have a good feel, others make you get mad. Some are soft, while website hurt. I think you get the picture. Often times, people was a website up, but they don't really consider the style of the website. What happens is they see things the like in other websites and try to integrate that idea. The problem is that the styles don't match. Yes, you can integrate just about anything in to any site, but you must consider the style, look, and feel of the website. When people design blindly, they end up with a mess of a website all because they didn't take time to consider website design styles.

Do you want a website that looks good? Consider the following website designs styles:

Minimalist is simply, a website with less distractions. It has a primary focus that makes it easy to follow. One might think that having less is easy to design for. In all reality, minimalist design concepts are hard. Because there is little to distract, it makes apparent design flaws more noticeable. Therefore, all the elements of design come into play. Any mistake is noticed. At the same time, if done correctly, a minimalist design style can be extremely attractive and convey the message in a focused manner.
This style also brings a sense of class or elegance. Most minimalist styles focus on two or three colors with a blank background being one of the colors. The font's are normally sharp, clean, or elegant. In a true minimalist website, you won't notice what is missing, all because the focus is presented so well, that you just simply follow along with the content.

When I think of retro, my mind always takes me back to the movie "Napoleon Dynamite". The entire movie seems to have been filmed in our day and age, yet the people were stuck somewhere between the 70's and 80's. Though that movie was stuck in that time frame, I have seen retro styles go all the way back to 50's cereal box designs or fast food styles. Retro websites try to convey the image of that time frame. Though the image is conveyed, our modern technology has allowed for improvement of the style from back them. Normally, this style has a simple color pallet and has a bold feel to it. The colors can be bland, but it's part of the style, so it looks good.

Elegant websites are normally more classy, and convey an image or royalty. They have more design elements, such as flowers, or caligraphy markings. Often, this style goes along with weddings or high end restaurants, businesses, or hotels. They normally have clean patterns and backgrounds. The elegant style also takes advantage of nice flowing fonts, such as calligraphy or handwritten. As mentioned, this style has a class to is, so the images presented should match the style. These type of websites are normally "soft" and don't come off aggressive or bold. Rather, they are welcoming/inviting, and make you feel "at home".

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, you find the grunge style. This style is harsh, bold, loud, and industrial. Normally appealing toward the youth, grunge websites are normally intense in their coloring schemes. They normally project a feel of "in your face". The message is very bold in a grunge website. Normally, a thought that comes to mind with grunge is metal and tire marks. I don't know why, but that just me I guess.
Also, a grunge website has a lot of textures and can be color rich. I have also seen a hybrid of a grunge and retro mixed. Over all, this style is youthful and bold.

This style is a mixture of well thought out fonts, layouts, and colors, mixed with a somewhat minimalist style. The reason minimalist comes into play is because typography promoted words over other elements of graphics. While it does have a minimalist style, in the sense that there are not many distractions, the typography style is more bold. This is because these design style tries to convey style with font. You may get a mixture of different fonts in a single design, which can become distracting, hence, it is not a full blown minimalist style.

Alongside the grunge style, you have the graphic intense style. As with grunge, graphic intense websites are bold. The difference is that they are not loud or harsh. Rather, they take the boldness from grunge, mix in great typography, and sprinkle in a little retro to come up with this style. Again, like the grunge style, graphic intense styles appeal to youth.

Last, but not least is the corporate website. This style has a minimalist feel because it is trying to convey a message, but it is not minimal at all. In fact, a corporate website may have LOTS of information to display. Rather, a corporate style has a professional edge. It't clean, sharp, not too intense, but not bland. As the name suggests, this style appeals to businesses or corporations that want a techie, but clean look.
