In this article I’m going to discuss “Open Content Management” which is an Open Source Content Management System. I will also be discussing which Content Management Systems (CMS) are best for which type of content.

  1. What is Open Source? Open source is a term described as a project or product that is open to the public.

  2. What is a Content Management System? A content management system is what it sounds like. It’s a system or application that allows the user to manage content. Most often times a Content Management System (CMS) is used to manage information on a website, or blog.

So in a nutshell Open Content Management is a CMS that is open to the public, and most importantly is developed by the public.

The most notable benefits of Open Content Management is the fact that it’s open for developers to make alterations to the CMS. This truly shows it’s color if you look into Joomla which has an extremely stable foundation as well as thousands of extensions. (Extensions are website add-ons like forms, photo galleries, eCommerce programs, etc…)

The Open Content Management movement has taken websites to the next level in a big way. This is because it allows everybody to add edit or delete content to their own website; it also allows anybody to add their own extensions or plugins. The benefit to this is the simplicity in creating a fully functional website.

When choosing a CMS it’s important to choose the CMS that will best assist your with your goals. Are you starting a website that generates business or sales? Are you starting an informational website or blog?
